BadBarb — Before we begin with the questions, please tell everyone about WITH EVERY BREATH.
Lynn Kurland — Sunshine Phillips' heart lies in Scotland, a land of rain, legend, and dangerously handsome Highland lords. She longs to call the magical place home, but after a day which includes such delights as blackening the eye of her lecherous boss and changing a flat tire in a chilly spring deluge, she'll settle for an evening spent curled up in front of a fire with a cup of tea. But what Sunny wants is not what Sunny gets... There's that's off the website because I'm really bad about describing plots.
nascarandbeans — That is one beautiful cover.
Lynn Kurland — N&B, the cover is gorgeous and I had nothing to do with it (which is the case anyway). My agent found it.
shelly M — Lynn, I know you switch back and forth between DePiaget and MacLeods, but how do you decide which character you are going to write about next?
Lynn Kurland — shelly, that's a good question. I guess the one that nags at me the most. There's not really an exact science to it.
shelly M — Each hero/heroine has their own personalities. Are they fashioned after people you know?
Lynn Kurland — shelly . . . Not usually, though I have been known to poach traits here and there. Take Alex, for instance (The Very Thought of You) and how he only grunts during dinner. I won't reveal any family secrets, but let's just say that I am used to a little dinner conversation and my husband prefers to concentrate on his food. I'll let you speculate further.
Lynn Kurland — I do try to fashion villains after former boyfriends . . . or maybe not. I don't want to get sued for defamation of character.
BonnieJean Hamilton — Lynn ... what inspired you to become a writer?
Lynn Kurland — Bonnie: I had mono during college, read a few smaller romances and decided I would have preferred different endings. That's the short answer. I hadn't intended to write for a living, but I just can't seem to quit it!
shelly M — What made you decide to write the part about the time gate opening in different times?
Lynn Kurland — shelly, I had first thought about making Cam a ghost, but it didn't seem like the right thing to do. It wasn't done out of any desire to do something different; it just seemed to fit with the story.
BonnieJean Hamilton — Do you find it harder to write in present time than in medieval?
Lynn Kurland — Bonnie, that does present some problems. It's harder for me to ignore the state of the world during the present day . . . and easier to ignore everything but what of history I want to in the past. I just try not to read too many British news blogs so I stay ignorant of what's going on in a day-to-day kind of way over there.
Cathryn L — Oh, is there a deadline looming?
Lynn Kurland — Cathryn, I'm finishing up revisions on Fantasy #3, then I have about 6 minutes to write the next romance. I'm sure it will take me that long to mentally clean paper plates out from under a certain hero's bed.
shelly M — Let's see, do we have to wait until next May for that book?
Lynn Kurland — Shelly, yes. It's my happy place, apparently.
nascarandbeans — Do you have a favorite scene in this book?
Lynn Kurland — Nascar . . . does anyone care if I give out any spoilers?
[general consensus was "No"]
Lynn Kurland — I think probably that whole scene when Cam's sitting in Penelope's salon and his phone rings . . . then he realizes who it is. Probably that whole chapter is my favorite. Oh, and maybe some stuff that hit the cutting room floor when I had to cut out 100 pages. I got a little wordy and had to be reined in.
nascarandbeans — Hmm, don't we all wish we could read the parts that got cut? I know I do.
Lynn Kurland — Oh, Nascar, you probably don't ;) I may do some sort of deleted scenes something at some point in the future.
BadBarb — Lynn how many books have you written to date?
Lynn Kurland — Barb, WEB is #24.
BonnieJean Hamilton — When was your first book published?
Lynn Kurland — Bonnie, Stardust of Yesterday came out in 1996.
Cathryn L — I think Sunny's go to herb is Lobelia.
Lynn Kurland — Cathryn, I think so too. I've tried it myself and it works. Too well. I won't give you any more details than that (to the accompaniment of huge sighs of relief, no doubt!).
Cathryn L — Did that come under the heading of "research?" lol
Lynn Kurland — Cathryn . . . that's me, just taking another one for the team . :)
shelly M — Is there ever a time when you start a book but then change in the middle to something different?
Lynn Kurland — Shelly, I'm usually too pressed for time to do that. I have to decide a year in advance what I'm going to work on next so I can drop hints in the genealogy chart.
BonnieJean Hamilton — Lynn ... have you ever looked back at any of your novels and wished you had written them differently?
Lynn Kurland — Bonnie . . . that's a terrible question!
Lynn Kurland — But I'll answer it, of course.
Lynn Kurland — There are probably things I would change, but the thought of going back and rewriting them is just too overwhelming. It's sort of like a card laid is a card played, you know?
nascarandbeans — Any sneak peeks on what's coming up?
Lynn Kurland — Nascar, just Zach's book next. I'm finishing up Fantasy #3 (Princess of the Sword). My plans are to switch between romance and fantasy for the foreseeable future.
shelly M — What made you decide to write the fantasy series? Is it something you've just wanted to do?
Lynn Kurland — Shelly, yes, it is something I've always wanted to do. I loved Tolkien as a kid and always wanted to do something in that vein. My first editor, Gail, managed to get the ball rolling with Berkley for me on it.
shelly M — And how do you come up with the names of people and places? You have quite an imagination!
Lynn Kurland — Shelly, if you're talking about names for the fantasy books, they're actually Scottish Gaelic and they do have specific meanings. I'd really like to do some sort of dictionary/pronunciation guide. In my spare time. :)
Cathryn L — Lynn, is there anything significant to WEB starting in 2005?
Lynn Kurland — Cathryn . . . it occurred to me a couple of years ago that if I didn't slow down how quickly time passed in the books, I was going to be writing about 45-yr-old virgins and I didn't think that would fly.
hookedonhistoricals — Lynn, is there a genre that you haven't written before that you'd like to try?
BonnieJean Hamilton — Lynn.. I can see you writing a medieval paranormal novel... perhaps about vampires ... :D
Lynn Kurland — Bonnie, did you know that the very first thing I submitted to Berkley was--if you can believe it--a vampire romance?
BonnieJean Hamilton — Now that you are a successful writer...why not trying to get it in print?
Lynn Kurland — I don't know about vampires . . . I'm just not ready to write in that vein.
Lynn Kurland — Paula & Barb: I just don't think it would fit very well with what I've already done, even though it's really the same sort of PG stuff I do, only with a little more gore, some glowing red eyes, and more vampy stuff.
PaulaL — What about using a pseudonym for it?
Lynn Kurland — Bonnie . . . I'll think about it. Maybe a password protected page on my website where you sign away all kinds of valuable things just to have a peek at things that really belong in a vault. :)
Lynn Kurland — HOH . . . I have this idea for sort of an illustrated YA fantasy series. I have a cousin-in-law who is a professional artist and we've talked about it. I just need an extra couple of months in the year!
Cathryn L — Do you have a release date for Princess yet?
Lynn Kurland — Cathryn, yes, Jan 2009.
